WELCOME & PROGRAMME OUTLINE

President Zebib K. Abraham will outline this year's programme.  We are delighted to have secured the expertise of authors, publishers, support organizations and poets who will share their experiences, knowledge and learnings that can help all of us on our personal author journey. There will also be sessions where we can read our work, share feedback, and take part in a live flash fiction competition and live editing of members’ queries and/or first pages, from an experienced agent & crime writer. We welcome new and old members and one-time, curious attendees.

Lindz McLeod: A Career in the Craft.

A career and craft presentation from author Lindz McLeod. She will discuss her varied fiction career, including her interesting journey into traditional publishing, working in very different genres, the current publishing market, having her work optioned for TV/film, and will share what she has learned in her years as an editor and a writer, and how her editing work informs her understanding of the craft of writing.

Bio - Lindz McLeod is an award-winning Scottish author and editor, who has published widely in literary fiction, speculative fiction, horror, and historical romance. She has published several popular novels including The Unlikely Pursuit of Mary Bennet and The Miseducation of Caroline Bingley, as well as horror novellas like Sunbathers, and eco-speculative novella We, The Drowning, and a craft anthology An Honour and a Privilege. Her short work has been published in Flash Fiction Online, Apex Magazine, Catapult, and more. She was nominated for best debut novel at the Romance Awards, and her short work has been nominated for various awards.

She has just completed a PhD in creative writing from Manchester Metropolitan University. 

Her work has been optioned for TV/film, and turned into avant-garde and animation.

In Conversation with Tariq Ashkanani

An author chat with Tariq Ashkanani discussing conventions of the crime genre, establishing a career in crime fiction, navigating the publishing industry, and lessons learned from his excellent writing podcast Page One.

Bio - Tariq Ashkanani is an award-winning Scottish crime author. His first novel, Welcome to Cooper, was released back in 2021 and won the Bloody Scotland Debut Award, and nominated for the Capital Crime Fingerprint Award and the CWA New Blood Dagger. His third novel is The Midnight King, which picked up the McIlvanney Award for best Scottish crime book of the year at Bloody Scotland. His latest novel is The Hollow Boys. He is also the co-host of the writing podcast Page One.

Talking Heads: Professor Rozane Vorzi and Olga Wojtas

In her interview with Olga Wojtas, Roxanne will talk about how she combines her university work with writing fiction, and how she draws on her academic expertise in her novels. She will also tell us about the challenges she has faced through having dyslexia – only discovering when she was an adult that she had this learning disorder. 

 

Bio - Roxanne Varzi is many things, including a multi-published author in various genres, artist, filmmaker, dyslexia ally and Full Professor of Anthropology and Film and Media Studies at the University of California Irvine. Alex, the crime-solving protagonist of her two Armchair Anthropology Whodunit titles, channels both Miss Marple and Margaret Mead.

Olga Wojtas writes cosy crime fiction. Her surrealist humour has been compared to, for example, P.G. Wodehouse and Blackadder. She has amassed an impressive following for the Miss Blaine’s Prefect series, the latest of which, Miss Blaine’s Prefect and the Parcel of Rogues, was a Waterstones’ Scottish Book of the Month.

Allan Guthrie: Editing Live

A unique event in which literary agent Allan Guthrie, who will do “live-edits” of members' queries and/or first pages. Volunteers (from our members) will submit to the club email address one week ahead of time with the first page of their novel and their query, which will be anonymized and presented to the group in the session. Al Guthrie will provide helpful critiques on these submissions from the perspective of an agent. 


Bio - Allan Guthrie is an award-winning Scottish crime writer and ebook bestseller. He is the author of five novels including Kiss Her Goodbye (nominated for an Edgar) and three novellas: including the Kindle bestsellers Killing Mum and Bye Bye Baby, and winner of the Theakston’s Crime Novel of the Year 2007. He is a literary agent with The North agency.

Donald Winchester: Literary Agent

We will discuss Donald Winchester’s work as a literary agent, what he looks for in submissions, what makes a good query package, what publishers are looking for and what books agents are sending out, and  the current state of the publishing market.

Bio - Donald is a literary agent at Watson, Little. He began his publishing career at Penguin Press before moving to A P Watt. He joined Watson, Little in 2013, looking after a mix of fiction and non-fiction. He lives near Edinburgh.

Reading out loud is a skill. Come prepared with up to 750 words or 3 minutes of a story, to read aloud in a safe and supportive environment.  Ideally a complete story or an extract from current work.  After everyone has read, we will break into small groups to share feedback.

Nick Binge: A Journey From Page to Screen

An author chat with Nick Binge discussing his cross-genre work, that blends sci-fi and thriller and horror elements, his approach to craft, establishing a dynamic and flexible fiction career, navigating the publishing industry.

Bio - Nicholas Binge is a bestselling author of speculative thrillers that blend big sci-fi concepts with psychological horror. He also writes crime and thriller novels under the pseudonym Nick Brucker, with his debut White Smoke set to release in 2027. 

In 2023, his breakout novel Ascension was a New York Times Editor's Choice Pick, finalist for the Goodreads' Choice Awards and Ignotus Award, and named a ‘best book of the year’ by Vulture, Goodreads, The LA Times, and The Sunday Times. His sophomore novel, Dissolution, was hailed as one of the best thrillers of 2025 by The New York Times, and was followed swiftly by the critically acclaimed novellas Extremity and Abyss. His work has been, or is being, translated into over twenty-five languages and several of his novels are in active development for either film or TV. Notably, Dissolution is being adapted into a major motion picture by Sony Pictures, with Oscar-nominated screenwriter Eric Heisserer (Arrival, Birdbox) penning the script, and White Smoke is being adapted into a prestige TV series by A24, with Benedict Cumberbatch starring in the lead. Ascension and Extremity are also in active development for film and TV, respectively.

Marc Lambert: Support For Authors

Marc Lambert will speak to us about the opportunities and resources available to writers through the Scottish Book Trust.

Bio - Marc Lambert studied history at Edinburgh University. He worked for Waterstone and Co. as a main fiction buyer, then for Penguin Books in Italy and the UK. After four years of interpreting contemporary art at The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh, he joined The Edinburgh International Book Festival, becoming the Assistant Director. In 2002 he was appointed CEO of Scottish Book Trust.

Esther Chilton: Writing Competitions – What Judges Are Looking For?

Esther will discuss her work as the leader of the Writers Bureau, an organization that helps teach creative writing through courses and workshops. She will share what she had learned about the craft of writing.

Bio - Esther Chilton is a widely published, award-winning author of short fiction and novels. As well as working as a writer, she is a copywriter and editor. She is the principal of the Writers Bureau.

Vesna Rajacic: Edinburgh Central Library Resources

Vesna will present on Lending and Children’s Library resources.

Bio - Vesna Rajacic is Library Development Leader for the Central Lending and Children’s Library Team at Edinburgh Central Library. She studied English Language and Literature,  and Comparative Literature at the University of Zagreb as first degree, followed by an MSc in Applied Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh and PG Diploma in Library and Information Management at Robert Gordon University.  Vesna worked in several Edinburgh community libraries, including Wester Hailes, Morningside, Moredun and Mobiles, in a variety of roles, as a Library Assistant, Library Officer and Team Leader before undertaking her current post in 2011. Her interests include language acquisition, information literacy,  reader development in reading groups, and impact of public libraries and reading on community health and wellbeing.

Jeremy Nelson: Tips on the Craft of Writing Poetry

Jeremy will speak to us about his winding journey into the world of poetry, from how he started in fiction and then shifted into writing poetry, to how he has established a successful career as a poet, and tips on the craft of writing poetry.

Bio - Jeremy Pak Nelson is a writer and artist from Hong Kong who now calls Manchester home. His work has appeared in Magma Poetry, Interpret, and others, and his climate fiction has been selected as a Grist: Imagine 2200 Editor’s Pick. He was writer-in-residence at UK Space Conference 2025. He holds an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and was part of the inaugural Poets of Colour Incubator program. His preoccupations include outdated methods of putting words on paper, folk fiddle, and the game of go. Jeremy became a City Poet of Manchester in 2026.

Flora Johnston: Scottish Historical Fiction

Flora Johnston will discuss her work in Scottish historical fiction, her approach to research and craft, and her experiencing publishing several novels.

Bio - Flora Johnston is a writer from Edinburgh with a particular interest in stories from Scotland’s past. Her latest novel, The Endeavour of Elsie Mackay, is inspired by a pioneering aviator from 1927, who dreamt of being the first woman to fly the Atlantic. Her other novel, The Paris Peacemakers, follows the stories of three Scots rebuilding their lives after World War One. Her debut novel, What You Call Free. She spent years researching adn telling Scottish stories through exhibitions, books and digital media, and has written several non-fiction books. Flora has a Scottish history degree from the St. Andrews University, has worked at the National Museum of Scotland, and worked in heritage interpretation.

Connor McAleese: Speculative Fiction

Conner will explain what speculative fiction entails, what structural elements speculative fiction genres can contain, the boundary between speculative and other genres, as well as cross-genre work – and will give a writing exercise.

Bio - Conner McAleese is a writer, researcher, and educator based in Dundee. He holds a PhD in contemporary horror literature and has published fiction across the UK and North America. His writing explores trauma, familial decay, and theology. He teaches creative writing and literature through workshops and seminars across Scotland.

Annie ZH Sun is a successful writer of short fiction who has published widely, and will share her craft tips on writing effective, well-structured, and thrilling short fiction.

Bio - Annie ZH Sun is a Chinese Writer who grew up in Malta. She graduated with a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing with distinction from the University of Edinburgh. Her work has appeared in Pseudopod, Flash Fiction Online, Hex Literary, Zoetic Press, and others.

Zebib K. Abraham: Stakes, Jeopardy and Tension in Creative Writing 

Zebib will present some of the most important aspects of creative writing.  How to raise the stakes, introduce jeopardy and create tension when developing your plot. She will review characters’ internal and external motivation and the three-act structure.

Bio - Zebib K. Abraham is a psychiatrist and writer.

Her debut novel, MY DARLING CLEMENTINE, is forthcoming from Amistad (Harper Collins) in 2027. She has published short fiction in Clarkesworld, Fantasy Magazine, Podcastle, Fractured Lit, JMWW, and more. She has also published non-fiction, film criticism, and poetry, performed as a storyteller, and run successful mental health and writing workshops. She attended Weill Cornell Medical College and graduated with a medical doctorate, and works as a psychiatrist. Z. K. Abraham is a recipient of the 2025 New Writers Award, under the Callan Gordon Award. She is a Royal Literary Fund Fellow.
